As the use of electric bicycles and riding toys (e-bikes) on city streets and sidewalks increases, the cities of Piney Point, Hunter’s Creek, and Bunker Hill have passed an ordinance to regulate their use to ensure the safety of children in the area.
The ordinance categorizes e-bikes by motor type and speed to minimize conflicts with pedestrians. It clarifies where e-bikes are allowed and ensures safety for all users.
Here are the summarized rules for e-bikes, electric scooters, and electric skateboards:
- Class 1 & 2 e-bikes should be ridden on sidewalks in villages.
- Class 3 e-bikes must be ridden on the roadway and follow moped laws.
- E-bike riders must yield to traffic, vehicles, and pedestrians.
- Riders under 17 must wear a helmet.
- Riders under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
- E-bikes must have lights and reflectors when ridden at night.
- Law enforcement will provide education to riders for 90 days, followed by warnings and potential citations for violations.
