The weather forecast for next week shows that cold arctic air and freezing temperatures may be headed our way. Although we don’t know the exact timing or impact of the cold weather, the City of Piney Point encourages residents to prepare and take precautions to protect the Four P’s: People, Pets, Plants and Pipes. With a possible arrival of Monday or Tuesday, we suggest preparations be completed by the end of the weekend.

The City has been in close contact with our Police and Fire Departments, which are both closely monitoring the weather, and are prepared to act quickly to implement increased staff and procedures. VFD will activate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at the fire station if needed. Please know, our first responders and the City stand ready to act and respond should the need arise.

People

Cold weather can be dangerous, especially for elderly, young children and people with medical conditions. Please plan ahead to ensure a safe and warm place is available. Layer clothing, minimize time outdoors and be cautious when using space heaters to avoid fire hazards.

Pets

Bring pets indoors during freezing weather. If they must stay outside, ensure they have adequate shelter, warm bedding and access to fresh water. Remember, it is unsafe to leave pets exposed to freezing conditions.

Plants

Cover or bring sensitive plants indoors to protect them from frost. Use blankets and other coverings to insulate outdoor plants. Ensure that coverings are securely fastened and do not touch the plant itself to prevent frost damage.

Pipes

Memorial Village Water Authority (MVWA) 713-465-8318 is available 24 hours to respond to water emergencies.

Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst, leading to costly repairs. To protect your pipes:

  • Wrap exposed pipes with insulation or towels
  • Disconnect outdoor hoses and cover outdoor faucets with insulated covers
