Message from Mayor Aliza Dutt
Dear Residents,
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Southeast Texas, excluding coastal counties, from Saturday to Sunday afternoon. Expect dangerously cold temperatures, strong wind chills, and potential freezing rain and ice, which may impact travel, utilities, and City services.
Winter Weather Quick Summary
- Freezing rain and ice possible this weekend.
- Dangerous cold through early next week.
- Winterize by Friday.
- Service delays are possible on Monday.
What to Expect
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday to Sunday afternoon in the Houston metro area. Expect cold temperatures, low wind chills, and increased risk of freezing rain and ice accumulation from Saturday night to Sunday. Hard freezes are expected Monday and Tuesday mornings. Prepare for 30 to 40 hours of sub-freezing conditions starting Saturday evening.
Stay Safe Preparedness Actions
People
- Prepare now to stay warm and safe during cold weather.
- Keep space heaters three feet away from children, pets, and flammable materials, and never use ovens or stoves for heating.
- Operate generators outdoors, away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.
Pets
- Bring pets inside and provide them with a warm, sheltered space.
Pipes
- Insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip to prevent freezing.
- Know how to turn off your home’s water supply if a pipe bursts.
- Shut off and drain sprinkler systems.
- Maximum winterization preparations should be completed by Friday afternoon to help reduce the risk of infrastructure damage.
Plants
- Cover or bring in plants to protect them from freezing temperatures.
- Tropical and sensitive vegetation should receive maximum freeze protection.
Travel
- Residents are encouraged to limit non-essential travel, especially Saturday night through Sunday, as freezing rain and icy road conditions may develop quickly.
Solid Waste and Recycling Service Notice
- GFL Environmental has informed the City that trash and recycling services may be delayed on Monday due to expected weather conditions.
- Service may be suspended for the day due to road conditions or landfill closures.
- Updates will be provided as conditions change, and any service changes will be posted on the City’s website.
Utility and Safety Reminders
- Always assume downed power lines are energized. Stay at least 35 feet away and report them immediately.
- If you smell natural gas, a strong rotten egg odor, leave the area immediately and call 911 and your gas provider once you are safely away.
- Utility providers, including CenterPoint Energy, are actively monitoring conditions and preparing crews, but winter weather can still result in outages.
