Storm Update - Thursday 05/23/2024
05/24/2024

Dear Piney Point Village Residents,

While so many of our residents’ lives are getting back to normal now that power has been restored to most of the City, I know that some residents are still waiting for their power to be restored.  If you’re still without power, please email your name, street address and phone number to me aliza@pineypt.org.

Tree debris removal by Harris County continues –you can identify them with the large black trucks. Yesterday they picked up debris from over 10 streets on their first pass in Piney Point Village.  They will be working through the holiday weekend, 12 hours a day, and will complete as many passes as needed to remove all debris from our City.

CenterPoint tree trimmers have been working throughout the Villages removing remaining limbs near the power lines.  Please be mindful of their work area and debris as you’re walking about in the neighborhood.

Xfinity continues work in Piney Point Village. We don’t have an official restoration date for everyone, but we’ve heard reports that most customers should be back up today or tomorrow.

As we recover from the severe storm one week ago, many of us are focused on repairs.  While City Council will consider permit relief for storm-related repairs at its meeting next week, there are several areas in which the City can immediately assist you in expediting the repair process.  Please review the information below and reach out to the designated City staff to assist you.

 Fences

Storm-related repairs of existing fences can be completed without a permit or City inspections if it meets the following requirements:

  • The fence is replaced with like materials and construction –so as to be as identical as reasonably possible to the fence being replaced;
  • The new fence is along the same footprint as the one being replaced;
  • The fence is to a height equal to or less than the height of the fence being replaced, not to exceed a total height of eight feet above the surrounding natural grade;
  • If the fence to be replaced is a wooden fence, the finished exterior side must face the adjacent street with no posts or rails visible from the adjacent street.

Please submit photos of storm damaged fences (if possible), along with any questions to Annette Arriaga, City Building Official, at bldgofficial@pineypt.org.

Electrical Service Repairs (Homeowner’s Responsibility)

Any storm-related electrical service permits will be expedited by the Building Department.  Please contact Annette Arriaga, City Building Official, at bldgofficial@pineypt.org for further information.

Tree Replacement

Piney Point Village prides itself in having a tree density requirement –each property has to maintain a required minimum number of qualified trees based on lot size.  If your property lost trees during the storm and you are concerned as to whether your property now falls under the minimum tree threshold, please contact Cary Moran, City Forester, at cary@pineypt.org for further information and guidance.

 House Repairs

The process for any storm-related house repairs will be expedited by the Building Department.  Please contact Annette Arriaga, City Building Official, at bldgofficial@pineypt.org for further information.

Installing New Generator

Residents interested in installing a home generator on their property should review the City’s permitting and plan submission requirements HERE or on the City’s website.  Given specific site conditions and preferred location(s), approval can be a lengthy process.  Please contact Annette Arriaga, City Building Official, at bldgofficial@pineypt.orgfor further information.

 It’s wonderful to get some normalcy back in our lives. I will continue to provide regular updates with key information for the community. Please tell your neighbors to sign up for V-linc through the MVPD website to get email updates from Police Chief Schultz and me and visit our City website https://www.cityofpineypoint.com/. Let’s continue to help our neighbors and friends recover from this disaster. Since I was also without power last week -- my neighbors gave me some generator recommendations which I will definitely follow up on soon!

Please don’t hesitate to contact any of us. We are happy to help!

Sincerely,

Aliza Dutt

Mayor of the City of Piney Point Village
